Get clear on the benefits of not drinking before you drop the bottle..I don’t know how many times I felt cornered into not drinking, or the numerous times I declared I would stop to shut people up, or how I absolutely pounded and binged alcohol the day before rehab. .Many, many times my utterances and promises that I would stop drinking were because I thought it was going to be easy. .I thought recovery or sobriety was solely about not drinking..Oh boy… was I wrong..There are so many misconceptions, myths, lies and false beliefs swirling in the mist that is your decision to stop drinking..Start with the basics..What do YOU want your life to look like?.Is drinking to excess going to get you closer to your life goals?.Is your health negatively affected by your alcohol use?.Are you in the profession of your dreams?.How are your personal relationships?.Do you live where you’d like to?.How is the condition of your car (if you have one)..Is your household full of chaos and drama, isolation and walking on eggshells?.Have your education goals been met?.Take an honest look at all areas of your life. Note where you can make improvements. Who can relate to this?.I can’t count how many humiliating experiences I had under the influence of alcohol. 20+ years of alcohol being in charge of my destiny,.How I survived for as long as I did is still a miracle and a mystery..Back in the day… you know the era before cell phones and internet… and even after internet as we know it today, word of mouth was the mode for distributing stories..Now, every single crappy, volatile, embarrassing, humiliating, and otherwise insane behavior is captured on a cell phone, posted to social media, and distributed to the world..I never went anywhere without alcohol, an escape plan, or a way to get more alcohol..Epic events ensued. .I was the anything goes girl. .That stopped being fun a long time before I put the bottle down for good..Drunk dialing, tipsy texting, childish and insane pranks, playing the victim, instigating drama, employing all the rationalization I could to continue acting outrageously..Don’t feel bad. It happens to everyone who over indulges in alcohol..The difference is most people have the good sense to stop. .Not us though. We go until we hit a wall. Until we’re cornered. Why do I sometimes refuse to take action when a problem or challenge comes up?.Sanity..I am reactive. I get out of balance very easily. I don’t like change. I don’t do well with the unexpected..Knowing what I know about myself and how my fight, flight or freeze emotional response activates and leads to irrational behavior, thoughts, and not great decision making… I know to basically stop, drop and roll!!.I am no good to myself, others, or in a particular situation (unless it’s an emergency, then I act fast) when I am spinning like a category 5 hurricane..I have an inquiring mind. I like to analyze. I like to learn. I like not making terrible decisions and having to live with the consequences..Now, sometimes, it doesn’t matter what I do… the situation is going to remain a C******F***..Stopping. Sitting. Thinking. Analyzing. .Calming myself the hell down..Being rational..Making good choices..Making the right choice..Maybe not taking action at all but letting things play out. Watching. Waiting..For me, not taking action right away is a coping strategy..You might be different. So, why don’t you drink?.Come on, just have one..You can have a glass of champagne, it’s not going to hurt you..Oh, you’re “one of those people” (AA is equal to a weird cult after all!!!).Side eye…. From the peanut gallery who think you’re an alien life form for being in a pub, club, social event or bbq and are not drinking alcohol..“Oh, you just got out of rehab,” end of conversation as they shuffle away..Your reason for not drinking alcohol is no one else’s business..You don’t have to say s**t..You don’t owe anyone an explanation why you turned up with a six pack of soda or a few bottles of bubbly water..Society likes to put people in boxes and label them. This is so people feel safe and secure. In social situations, how often do you cause a scene or get absolutely s**t-faced drunk?.How many mornings do you wake up and have no memory of the end of the evening?.Do you avoid looking at your phone when you wake up with a hangover?.Is nausea and the shakes, followed by hair of the dog your survival tactic after you tie one on?.YOU my dear, have an alcohol problem. .Normal people rarely drink to blackout..Normal people may have hazy recollection of the night before, but have a full memory bank when the brain engages..Yeah, we’ve all done the tipsy text deal. Totally cringe worthy and instantly regrettable. However, turning your phone off and tossing it to the other side of the room is not particularly effective. Nor is avoiding electronics for the next 24 hours in fear..Hair of the dog to get out of bed, or a huge still Bloody Mary in place of breakfast is not standard practice among ‘normies’ (ok, a Bloody Mary after a special occasion is normal, pouring triple or half a pint into it is not!)..It is scientifically proven that as people get older, as part of the maturation process, many will stop drinking to excess. Priorities change. Responsibilities grow. Consequences are no longer acceptable. People stop drinking, or stop drinking to excess..If drinking like a sailor and acting like a pirate is the norm for you….It’s time to rethink that drink..Alcohol abuse is going to limit your life in ways you can’t even imagine right now..When alcohol becomes your priority the rest of your life is going to go to hell..ASK ME how I know..I dare you to ask me a question about my drinking career. What story are you telling yourself to justify picking up a drink and breaking your sober streak?.What makes it ok?.How do you feel as you reach for that bottle?.Let me tell you, once you break your sober streak, your drink of choice is not going to taste as sweet. .Getting ploughed in the name of “well I had one, I may as well have 10,” is going to leave you feeling like a big fat failure as soon as the hangover hits..Or you might end up in self-pitying tears of misery by the end of the night, with a drink in your hand and an empty bottle at your feet..There will be shame..There will be guilt..You will feel sorry for yourself..Most likely there’ll be a bit steaming pile of s**t to clean up..But really, what rationalization do you use to blow up your life?.There’s a million denial tactics that you will employ to justify drinking..Drinking is all well and good, if that’s what you want to do, really, it is your choice, bad choices are still choices…. The struggle is real. . It’s easy to be flippant

The struggle is real..It’s easy to be flippant about ‘one day at a time’ when you have never experienced it..“Normies” can be clueless about addiction and recovery. Not because they are indifferent about it, society as a whole does not educate the general population about the realities of chemical dependency..When you decide to stop drinking or drugging… who has taught you what that actually entails?.Chances are you have limited knowledge and subscribe to stereotypical depictions of people who use substances to excess..One 24 hour period feels like an eternity when you begin your journey..Lasting one hour, one minute, or one second when your cravings and urges are riding your ass is a monumental struggle..Detox and associated symptoms can last 7-10 days..The worst withdrawal symptoms will subside after 72 hours or so..And along for the ride is your mind, the very mind that will f**k with you every step of the way..I encourage you to develop a plan to safely and sanely detox and get through the first 30 days..Educate yourself. Talk to your dr, sign up for therapy, find a network of support, ask your closest friends to help, join online groups, employ any and all resources at your disposal..24 hours feels like an eternity. Getting sober doesn’t guarantee your life is going to be rainbows and unicorns..You’re human. Mistakes will be made. Emotions will consume you. Poor decisions will still happen. Hormones will turn you into a Tasmanian devil. Health issues will plague you. Kids will make you scream. Relationships will remain an enigma..Bad days will appear like magic when you least expect them..Things will go wrong..Life will be turned upside down...At times you will resemble the wicked witch of the west..And you know what? That’s ok...There will be times you can’t cope. No matter how you try to work out a solution or practice grace… it can all go terribly, horribly wrong..There are days that I can’t cope with things. Life is all bad. I’m an anxious, angry, bitter, resentful, miserable, screaming, difficult to be around...I try to soothe or distract, I try to reason with, I attempt to take a step back. .NOTHING works. In fact, I can make things a lot worse..I don’t like feeling or acting badly. .At the end of the day (and during) bad days can be endured. Remind yourself constantly that life happens and you are ok..Taking the time at the end of the day to reflect is really helpful..Understanding and affirming that you are not perfect, but you are sober and doing the best you can, AND not drinking to cope… makes you a rockstar..Bad days end.
